Bolton and Bury Business Awards

Last year Westhoughton market won the We’re Backing Bolton award in the Bolton and Bury Business Awards.  This year Jean, who has the underwear stall on the market (do check out the stall as she has lots of retro underwear and tights) suggested that we apply for Best Start Up Business.  As I was in Germany at the time, Wayne and Kath submitted an 11th hour application, not holding out much hope of being successful.

Then a few weeks later they received a call from Bolton and Bury Business awards advising that Vibrant Vintage had been selected as a finalist.  Wayne and Kath called me in Germany and told me the news.  I didn’t realise just how important it was to be a finalist until I was told that Vibrant Vintage had beaten 100′s of other start up businesses to become a finalist!!!

Bolton and Bury Business Awards

When I returned from Germany thoughts turned to what to wear to the awards.  I love the 1950′s but as I usually wear 50′s clothes I decided to for a 1920′s look as the Great Gatsby style looks fab.  I do like a 1920′s bob but with waist long hair this can be hard to pull off.  However, I decided to attempt a 1920′s bob by curling my hair and pinning it, the look is finished off with a vintage fascinator.  The dress I wore is Marks and Spencer, the shoes Karen Millen, the bag Prada, and finished off with a vintage silver fox fur butterfly wrap.

Kath wore a 1920′s style dress with a little black wrap and fox fur wrap, while Wayne wore a dinner jacket and vintage white scarf.

A few days before the award ceremony the Bolton Evening News had a supplement with all the businesses that had got to the final.  At this point I started to worry as in our category the businesses were already huge with impressive turnovers.  Vibrant Vintage was the smallest company by far and the only one without employees!!  The business awards ceremony was held on Thursday 20th June at De Veres.  The evening started with a bucks fizz reception and then a three course meal.  The starter was a yummy butternut squash soup, followed by chicken and veg and finishing with profiteroles.

Vibrant Vintage didn’t win the award but we received a “commended” certificate that has pride of place in the shop.  Vibrant Vintage are proud to have been nominated as a finalist and would like to thank everyone who has supported us at the market, at the shop or at one of our fairs.  We really couldn’t have done any of this without you.  There is a special thank you to Jean Coban who made us apply for the award in the first place (those who have been to one of our fairs we have seen Jean as her daughter owns Urban Chocolate Company).

Photoshoot (part 1)

I have been lucky enough to take part in a number of photo shoots with some very talented photographers and models where Vibrant Vintage clothes have been used.  I am always asked if it is glamorous and have been wanting to write about the photo shoots for some time.   Here is an honest two part blog about what it really is like behind the scenes of a photo shoot.

The first photo shoot I took part in, was in February 2012 at Rose and Lee Living’s Studio.  The idea was for the businesses involved to give their time and expertise in exchange for the photos.  My role was to dress and style the models.  I really enjoyed working with the models to create some great vintage looks

The venue was perfect for a photo shoot as there was lots of exquisite antiques.  I was one of the models but was full of a nasty cold with a bright red nose.  Alice did a wonderful job of hiding my hideous nose and kept telling me to dab my nose and under no circumstances should I blow my nose.  Believe it or not it is very difficult to refrain from blowing your nose!  However, I’m glad I did as the photos were brilliant!

Sadly the heating at the venue had broken so it was very cold.  The models had to wear fur coats in between shoots.  However Rose and Lee Livings mum kept the team going with hot cups of tea and even cooked us all a lovely meal after the shoot.  It really was a fab day and a great example of businesses pulling together to help each other achieve some great photos.  As a result of this the photos turned out beautifully

After this photo shoot the stunning Coco Fierce contacted me to borrow some clothes from Vibrant Vintage for a 1940′s shoot at a disused RAF Tilstock airfield.  The make up artist was Alice Kitty Wink.  Although the shoot took place in March, it was a freezing cold day.  Coco Fierce was a trooper and did not complain about the cold at all, as a result the photos look fab.  Coco Fierce is wear a original 1950′s winter wiggle dress on the left hand side.  While in the photo on the right she is wear a 1970′s coat and dress.

Coco Fierce has also borrowed clothes from Vibrant Vintage for a Candy Candy shoot (photographer Laura Hince) and a Jubilee shoot (photographer Mudkiss photography).  For the Candy Shoot Coco Fierce wore an original 1950′s black and yellow dress (on the left) and a 1980′s cream wedding/event dress for the Jubilee shoot.  Since this photo shoot Coco Fierce has gone on to model for some top designers and I am honoured to have had her modelling Vibrant Vintages clothes.

Last year Vibrant Vintage had a stall at Polka Dots and Pearls vintage wedding fair.  Kath and I attended the fair as Wayne isn’t great with wedding dresses!  Alice was the make up artist for the event and got all the models ready for the catwalk show.

I dressed the models in their dresses for the catwalk show and decided who looked best in which dress.  Some of the models involved in the catwalk show had to have a quick change in the middle of the catwalk show.  Before this I didn’t realise how difficult it is to get in and out of a wedding dress!  This was a great experience but at the time it was very stressful trying to get the models in their dresses and on the catwalk in time.

Thankfully the catwalk show was great and all the models looked beautiful.  The flower stalls made some lovely bouquets that complimented the dresses perfectly.  Vibrant Vintage still have wedding dresses and if you are getting married and want a vintage dress drop us an email and we will arrange a fitting at the shop.

Our shop so far

The Vibrant Vintage shop has been open for nearly 2 months and I can honestly say I do not know where the time has gone.  The shop is looking very full now and I can’t believe that we had been storing all these clothes in our garage in between fairs!

023 (640x480)

A few weeks ago we had our signs put over the shop.  We opted for a sign over each of our windows and then our logo over the door.

027 (640x480)

In the main room we have ordered the vintage clothing into decades, while our maxi dresses are near the window.  We have clothes from the 1940′s – 1980′s and accessories from 1920′s.  If you can’t find what you are looking for just ask as we may have something in our stockroom.

031 (480x640)

We have two dressers, one art deco and the other shabby chic with lots of lovely vintage dressing table sets to manicure sets to retro clothes hangers.  We also have furniture, a large suitcase full of scarfs and a shabby chic hat stand.

026 (480x640)

Then we have a lovely art deco ladies wardrove full of fur and faux fur coats.  On top of this wardrobe we have some fabuolous suitcases, hat boxes and delicate Victorian hats (all for display i’m afraid)

Our next room we have used as the retro and collectable room.  This rrom isn’t quite finished as we want wallpaper on one wall, to stock some retro dresses in sizes 8-22 and buy a unit to display all of our lovely china.  We hope to have this room finished in the next month

In our final room we have created an intimate space for men, with a collection of harris tweed jackets, hats, scarfs and collectables.

The shop is open Tuesday – Saturday 9am-5pm.  However, we will be organising after work and Sunday events in the shop where you can learn to knit or have a make up class.  Keep posted for more information.  If you are passing Westhoughton, pop in to say hello.

Our little shop
